Laboratory Measurements in Nuclear Astrophysics
نویسنده
چکیده
After reviewing some of the basic concepts, nomenclatures and parametrizations of Astronomy, Astrophysics and Cosmology, we introduce a few central problems in Nuclear Astrophysics, including the hot-CNO cycle, helium burning and solar neutrino’s. We demonstrate that Secondary (Radioactive) Nuclear Beams allow for considerable progress on these problems.

Nuclear Masses: Experimental Programs, Theoretical Models and Astrophysical Interest
Knowledge of the mass plays a key role in understanding the nuclear physics of interest to astrophysics. Some nucleosynthesis scenarios, for example, involve isotopes that may never be produced in the laboratory. In these cases mass models must be used, however there are none in agreement beyond what is measured. A brief review of the various models available and the numerous experimental progr...
متن کاملOn Solar System and Cosmic Rays Nucleosynthesis and Spallation Processes
A brief survey of nuclide abundances in the solar-system and in cosmic rays and of the believed mechanisms of their synthesis is given. The role of spallation processes in nucleosynthesis is discussed. A short review of recent measurements, compilations, calculations, and evaluations of spallation cross sections relevant to nuclear astrophysics is given as well. It is shown that in some past as...
متن کاملThe Path to Improved Reaction Rates for Astrophysics
This review focuses on nuclear reactions in astrophysics and, more specifically, on reactions with light ions (nucleons and α particles) proceeding via the strong interaction. It is intended to present the basic definitions essential for studies in nuclear astrophysics, to point out the differences between nuclear reactions taking place in stars and in a terrestrial laboratory, and to illustrat...

Nuclear reaction cross sections are usually very small in typical astrophysical environments. It has been one of the major challenges of experimental nuclear astrophysics to assess the magnitude of these cross sections in the laboratory. For a successful experiment high luminosity beams are needed. Increasing the target width, one also increases the reaction yields. But, this is of limited use ...
متن کاملNuclear Processes at Solar Energy
LUNA, Laboratory for Underground Nuclear Astrophysics at Gran Sasso, is measuring fusion cross sections down to the energy of the nucleosynthesis inside stars. Outstanding results obtained up to now are the cross-section measurements within the Gamow peak of the Sun of He(He, 2p)He and the D(p, γ)He. The former plays a big role in the proton-proton chain, largely affecting the calculated solar ...
